Guyana Backs India’s Anti-Terror Stance: PM Phillips and VP Jagdeo Express Support

India’s high-level anti-terror diplomatic outreach continued to gain momentum in the Caribbean as the all-party Indian parliamentary delegation led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor received strong political backing from Prime Minister Mark Anthony Phillips and Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo of the Republic of Guyana.

In a meeting held in Berbice, PM Phillips condemned terrorism unequivocally and described the attack in Pahalgam on April 22 as “barbaric.” He stated Guyana’s support for India’s zero-tolerance stance and emphasised the deep historical and cultural ties between the two nations. “Guyana condemns all acts of terrorism. We believe in peaceful coexistence and the observance of the rule of law,” he stated.

Vice President Jagdeo, who served as President of Guyana for 12 years, echoed these sentiments. “Guyana stands unequivocally with India. We are against terrorism in all its forms and believe perpetrators must be brought to justice,” he told the Indian delegation, which includes MPs from across India’s political spectrum.

Tharoor, in a post on X, noted that the conversation with Jagdeo touched on bilateral cooperation opportunities following Guyana’s recent oil discoveries. “From infrastructure to fintech, agriculture, and telecoms — Guyana is open to deepening its relationship with Indian companies,” he stated. He also highlighted Guyana’s 30% annual economic growth and its demand for skilled labor, welcoming Indian expertise across sectors.

Tharoor’s visit follows impactful engagements in New York, where the delegation paid respects at the 9/11 Memorial, connecting global terror experiences and underlining India’s call for universal justice. Earlier legs of the delegation also included Slovenia, Kuwait, and South Korea, all reinforcing India's zero-tolerance policy and pushing for a global anti-terror consensus.

Highlighting India’s soft power strategy, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, also part of the delegation, shared how spiritual organizations like Art of Living, ISKCON, and Brahmakumaris contribute to Guyana’s cultural diversity and social cohesion. “They are the spiritual and cultural anchors of the Indian diaspora here,” he noted.

The delegation comprises MPs Shambhavi Chaudhary (Lok Janshakti Party), Sarfraz Ahmed (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha), G M Harish Balayogi (Telugu Desam Party), Shashank Mani Tripathi, Bhubaneswar Kalita, Mallikarjun Devda (Shiv Sena), and Taranjit Singh Sandhu, India’s former Ambassador to the United States.

The engagement in Guyana underscores India's strategic use of parliamentary diplomacy to amplify global consensus on terror, diversify economic partnerships, and extend India’s influence across continents as part of the broader vision outlined in Operation Sindoor.
