Tharoor Held Substantive Talks With Guyanese PM Mark Phillips Over Dinner
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor met Guyanese Prime Minister Mark Anthony Phillips over dinner during the Indian parliamentary delegation’s visit to Georgetown.
Tharoor described the meeting as “substantive and convivial.” Prime Minister Phillips, a former Army Chief, was joined by seven Cabinet Ministers, including those from Finance and Agriculture. Discussions covered Guyana’s developmental agenda, bilateral cooperation, and the broader trajectory of India-Guyana ties.

The engagement also highlighted people-to-people connections. The Prime Minister’s wife had previously spent six weeks in Ahmedabad, attending a government-backed programme on entrepreneurship and NGO management—a fact noted by Tharoor as emblematic of the strong grassroots links between the two countries.
The informal setting enabled candid conversations on Guyana’s economic growth—fueled by recent oil and gas discoveries—and how Indian expertise in infrastructure, agriculture, and fintech could support its national development.
This meeting followed the delegation’s earlier high-level interaction with Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo, who reaffirmed Guyana’s unequivocal support for India’s stance against cross-border terrorism, particularly in the wake of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and India’s calibrated response through Operation Sindoor.
With over 40% of Guyana’s population of Indian origin, the bilateral relationship has both cultural resonance and strategic value. The Indian MPs’ visit served to reinforce ties, align on development priorities, and amplify India’s global campaign to build consensus on zero tolerance for terrorism.
The delegation, spanning parties from across the Indian political spectrum, was also scheduled to participate in Guyana’s 59th Independence Day celebrations, deepening the diplomatic engagement and shared values of democracy, development, and peace.
