A Pakistani national was shot and killed by Indian border forces on Friday evening after allegedly crossing the international frontier in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district and ignoring warnings to stop.

According to a statement released by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) on Saturday, troops spotted “one suspicious person advancing towards the border fence,” which lies beyond the official frontier. Despite being challenged verbally, the individual reportedly continued to approach the fence, which prompted Indian forces to open fire.

“The intruder was neutralised on the spot,” the BSF said.

The shooting comes two weeks after a brief but intense conflict between India and Pakistan, both nuclear-armed nations, that left over 70 people dead. The violence followed a deadly terrorist attack in Indian-administered Kashmir in April, which killed 26 people.

India blamed Pakistan for enabling the terrorists, an allegation Islamabad has denied so far.

Banaskantha, along with Rajasthan—both bordering Pakistan’s south-eastern Sindh province—has long been known as a hotspot for cross-border drug smuggling.

Authorities in India have frequently seized millions of dollars worth of narcotics in the region and have arrested or killed multiple Pakistani smugglers in recent years.

Authorities in Pakistan have launched an investigation into the identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

This latest incident risks reigniting tensions along the already volatile India-Pakistan border, despite a ceasefire that was agreed upon following the recent escalation.
