India Receives Strong German Support on Terrorism; Jaishankar States Stance on Pakistan

India and Germany reaffirmed their strategic partnership during a high-level meeting in Berlin between Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and German Minister Johann Wadephul. The visit comes in the wake of India’s robust response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, and as part of a broader diplomatic outreach to consolidate global consensus against cross-border terrorism.

At a joint press conference, Minister Jaishankar declared, “India has zero tolerance for terrorism” and will never give in to nuclear blackmail. He stated India would handle its relationship with Pakistan strictly on a bilateral basis, asserting, “There should be no confusion in any quarter.”

Minister Wadephul, speaking alongside Jaishankar, condemned the recent terror strike and voiced Germany’s full support for India’s right to defend itself. He also emphasized the importance of dialogue between India and Pakistan to address long-standing issues.

The ministers reviewed the evolving India-Germany strategic partnership, marking 25 years of collaboration. They identified growth areas such as clean energy, defence, critical technologies, and resilient supply chains.

Dr. Jaishankar also held talks with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Minister of Economy and Energy Katherina Reiche. Discussions focused on strengthening industry linkages, workforce mobility, and building a robust economic partnership.

Following India’s military countermeasures under Operation Sindoor, which targeted nine terror camps in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, Germany’s diplomatic support is seen as a key endorsement. The operation was launched after the brutal Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians, followed by Pakistani retaliation efforts that ceased after four days.

“I came to Berlin in the immediate aftermath of India's firm response to the Pahalgam terror attack. Germany’s understanding that every nation has the right to defend itself against terrorism is deeply valued,” Jaishankar said.

He emphasized Germany’s pivotal role in strengthening ties with the EU and welcomed German support for finalizing the India–EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA). “If we can finalize the FTA this year, it will open numerous new doors for businesses on both sides,” Jaishankar stated.

The External Affairs Minister also engaged with German lawmakers and policy advisors, including Gunter Sautter, Foreign and Security Policy Advisor to Chancellor Merz. He appreciated the Bundestag’s support for stronger ties and multilateral coordination, especially in the Indo-Pacific.

His Berlin visit concluded the final leg of a three-nation European tour through the Netherlands, Denmark, and Germany, a crucial phase in India’s diplomatic campaign to isolate state sponsors of terrorism and reinforce its sovereign defense rights.

With shared democratic values and economic synergy, both nations aim to deepen cooperation in global governance, security, and trade—setting the tone for a stronger Indo-German alliance amid shifting geopolitical currents.
