Tharoor Discussed Anti-Terror Solidarity and Economic Cooperation with Guyana’s Vice President Jagdeo
Congress MP and former UN diplomat Shashi Tharoor, leading an all-party Indian parliamentary delegation to Guyana, held an in-depth meeting with Bharrat Jagdeo, Vice President of Guyana and former president (2000–2012), at the Presidential Palace in Georgetown.

The discussion spanned both political solidarity in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack and a wide-ranging dialogue on economic collaboration between the two nations.
Tharoor, who has emerged as a key diplomatic voice during India’s diplomatic outreach post Operation Sindoor, confirmed that Jagdeo expressed strong sympathy and understanding for India’s counter-terrorism concerns. This acknowledgment comes amid India’s multi-country outreach to secure global support for its zero-tolerance stance on terrorism following the April 22 attack in India's Jammu and Kashmir.
Beyond security, the meeting reflected Guyana’s growing economic ambitions and India’s potential role. Jagdeo, under whose previous presidency Guyana navigated major energy and development reforms, highlighted his country’s record-breaking 30% annual economic growth — a surge driven by new offshore oil and gas discoveries.
Tharoor noted that “a large number of opportunities for Indian companies were mentioned,” specifically in agriculture, telecom, banking, and highway infrastructure. With Guyana now facing labour shortages, Jagdeo also expressed willingness to welcome Indian workers to support national growth efforts.
The two leaders’ dialogue aligned with India’s broader push for stronger partnerships across the Global South, particularly in regions where Indian-origin populations form a significant part of the demographic fabric. Over 40% of Guyana’s population is of Indian descent, creating a natural bridge for deeper bilateral engagement.
