Tharoor-Led Delegation Welcomed by Indo-Guyanese Community in Georgetown
Continuing its diplomatic mission under Operation Sindoor, India’s all-party parliamentary delegation led by Dr. Shashi Tharoor was met with warmth and enthusiasm by members of the Indo-Guyanese community upon arrival at their hotel in Georgetown on Monday.
Images from the scene capture an atmosphere of pride and solidarity: community members holding Indian and Guyanese flags, exchanging greetings, and presenting flowers to the delegation. Dr. Tharoor, a seasoned diplomat and parliamentarian, described the moment as a “warm welcome,” reflecting both the cultural bonds and political resonance of the visit.

The reception follows the delegation’s recent stop in New York, where Tharoor delivered a powerful message at the 9/11 Memorial, and sets the tone for engagements in Guyana centered around counterterrorism, diaspora solidarity, and democratic cooperation. The visit coincides with Guyana’s 59th Independence Day, with Indian MPs scheduled to attend the President’s midnight address and participate in national celebrations in Berbice.
The Indo-Guyanese community, many of whom trace their roots back to 19th-century indentured labour migration from India, remains a vibrant pillar of Guyana’s multicultural identity. Their reception of the delegation underscores deep emotional ties and enduring appreciation for India’s global outreach, especially on issues of peace, security, and mutual respect.
The delegation, including MPs from across party lines, is expected to engage Guyanese leadership, civil society, and local influencers to further strengthen the India–Guyana partnership and amplify India’s unified stand against terrorism on the global stage.
