Ex-UN Top Diplomat Tharoor Seen in Candid Exchange with Envoy at Guyana Airport
After delivering a firm message on global terrorism at the 9/11 Memorial in New York just hours ago, Dr. Shashi Tharoor—former UN Under-Secretary-General and current MP leading India’s parliamentary delegation—was seen in what he described as a “good conversation” with Indian High Commissioner Amit Telang at Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Guyana.

The brief but visible moment of exchange took place shortly after Tharoor and fellow MPs landed in Georgetown for a multi-day diplomatic visit leading India’s global campaign against cross-border terrorism. The delegation was welcomed by senior diplomats, including former Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu, with two MPs having arrived earlier the previous evening.
“We will be present at the midnight address by the President tonight, marking Guyana’s 59th Independence Day,” Tharoor noted in a post, signaling both ceremonial participation and strategic engagement. His visit follows a compelling intervention in the U.S., where he declared, “There has to be a new normal. We cannot absorb aggression in silence,” while affirming India’s measured but firm approach to terrorist provocations.
With this, Indian diplomatic outreach has entered its Latin American phase. Tharoor’s presence in Georgetown shows India’s twin emphasis on diplomatic depth and symbolic solidarity. With his blend of international credibility and parliamentary stature, the former UN official is expected to project India’s strength, reinforce soft power, and foster partnerships built on democratic values and shared security concerns.
