Paraguayan President Santiago Pena scheduled for State Visit Aimed at Deepening Strategic Ties
India is preparing to welcome the President of Paraguay, Santiago Peña Palacios, for his first-ever State Visit to the country from June 2 to 4, 2025, at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit marks a major diplomatic milestone, aimed at reviewing the entire spectrum of bilateral relations and forging stronger economic and strategic ties between India and the South American nation.

Accompanied by a high-level delegation of ministers, senior officials, and business leaders, President Peña’s three-day visit will include meetings in New Delhi and Mumbai. It is only the second time a Paraguayan President is visiting India since diplomatic relations were formally established on September 13, 1961.
On June 2, President Peña will hold formal talks with Prime Minister Modi in the national capital, where both leaders are expected to conduct a comprehensive review of bilateral cooperation, including trade, health, agriculture, information technology, and pharmaceuticals. The discussions will also encompass shared positions on global issues such as UN reforms, climate change, renewable energy, and the global fight against terrorism—areas where India and Paraguay have repeatedly found common ground.
President Droupadi Murmu is expected to meet the visiting dignitary and host a banquet in his honour, while Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar will also hold bilateral interactions.
In Mumbai, President Peña will engage with the state’s political leadership and interact with Indian business leaders, start-ups, and innovators. Given Paraguay's growing appeal as a Latin American investment destination, these conversations are expected to explore new avenues for joint ventures in areas such as infrastructure, automobiles, and digital services.
India considers Paraguay an important trading partner in the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region. Indian companies in sectors such as automobiles and pharmaceuticals already have a growing footprint in Paraguay, and the Paraguayan side has shown increasing interest in expanding collaboration through joint ventures in India.
President Peña’s visit comes at a time when India is intensifying its outreach to Latin American nations through high-level exchanges and economic diplomacy. This engagement aligns with India's broader goal of diversifying strategic partnerships globally while reinforcing its role in multilateral forums.
The state visit is expected to result in several new MoUs and business agreements, significantly expanding the scope of the India–Paraguay partnership.
