Shehbaz Sharif Meets Azerbaijani President in Lachin
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in the city of Lachin today, in a visit aimed at consolidating bilateral ties amid heightened geopolitical sensitivity across South and West Asia.

The meeting, described by Sharif as an expression of “brotherhood,” comes during the final leg of his regional tour and follows recent developments in the subcontinent. Notably, It comes following the Pahalgam terror attack in India and subsequent Indian military response under Operation Sindoor that crippled 20 per cent of Pakistani Air Force strength in less than 23 minutes.
In a public statement following the meeting, Sharif thanked Azerbaijan for its “unwavering support” to Pakistan in the context of the recent escalation in India–Pakistan tensions. While no details were provided, the reference appeared to be a response to India’s Operation Sindoor diplomatic campaign, which has sought global backing for its zero-tolerance stance on terrorism and increased pressure on states perceived to be harboring extremist networks.
The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening cooperation across sectors including energy, trade, defense, and regional connectivity. Sharif characterized the engagement as rooted in long-standing cultural and political affinity between the two nations, emphasizing “shared resolve” for peace and prosperity.
Lachin, a symbolically significant city in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, provided the backdrop for this high-visibility meeting. As India mobilizes parliamentary delegations worldwide to spotlight its anti-terrorism campaign, Sharif’s choice of language and diplomatic venues reflects Pakistan’s intent to reinforce existing alliances and signal regional alignment.
The visit is being closely observed by foreign policy analysts.
While no joint statement was issued, officials from both sides indicated that follow-up consultations are expected on defense coordination and economic initiatives.
