Speaking prior to departure, Dr. Tharoor had said: “I’m heading off to five countries... to speak for the nation, to speak about this horrendous crisis... to give the world the message that we will not be silenced by terrorism and we don’t want the world to look away either.” He described the mission as “one of peace, of hope, and of standing for democracy, freedom, and truth.”
Members of the all-party parliamentary delegation led by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor paid their respects at the 9/11 Memorial in New York. The visit came shortly after the delegation’s arrival in the country. Shashi Tharoor was joined by MPs Ganti Harish Madhur, Shashank Mani Tripathi, Bhubaneswar Kalita, Milind Deora, and former Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu. India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, also accompanied the delegation during the tribute.
The members offered white roses and folded their hands in silent obeisance at the site, which commemorates the victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks and the earlier 1993 World Trade Center bombing. Speaking at the memorial, Dr. Tharoor stated, “Perpetrators of terror must be brought to justice. We are not going to stop our hunt for those who did this latest atrocity (Pahalgam terror attack).”
