Understanding Karuna: The Civilisational Idea of Compassion in Indian Philosophy, Public Ethics and Governance

Image
✍️ Written by Saket Suman There are some words that a civilisation carries for centuries and in due course of time it becomes a part of our living memory. Karuna is one such word in India.  It does not translate cleanly into “compassion” because it asks much more of us than sympathy, charity, or even kindness. Karuna is an obligation. It is the unsettling recognition that somebody else’s suffering is not separate from our own and therefore cannot be ignored without cost to the self. In the Indian philosophical imagination, Karuna holds together ethics, community, and governance in ways that are both simple and righteous. To speak of Karuna, then, is not to speak of benevolence in the abstract but of the moral mechanics by which a society chooses to function or fail. Reprsentational Image of Aloka, the peace dog! India Isn’t the One Funding Russia’s War Chest: Urgewald’s Rotters Highlights EU Role in €7.2B Yamal LNG Trade

Image
✍️ Written by Saket Suman In a development likely to intensify global scrutiny over energy trade during wartime, a new dataset analyzed by German NGO Urgewald reveals that European Union member states funneled an estimated €7.2 billion to Russia in 2025 alone through imports from the Yamal LNG project.  The findings, backed by Kpler shipping data and released today, show that 76.1% of Yamal LNG exports, roughly one in every seven ships docking at European LNG terminals, were destined for the EU. File Photo; via FNNG Alliance This revelation carries sharp geopolitical consequences. With the EU having committed to a full ban on Russian LNG by 2027, the 2025 data illustrates a contradiction between stated policy and actual practice.  Despite a reduction in overall volumes, the EU’s proportional dependence on Yamal gas has deepened, and it casts doubts on Europe’s enforcement of sanctions amid Russia’s ongoing conflict in Ukraine. India's External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar’s ongoing visit to France and Luxembourg from January 4–9, 2026, comes at a time of significant global upheaval. US military action in Venezuela has intensified global debate over sovereignty, legality, and great power behavior.  Jaishankar’s engagements across Europe are positioned to firmly underline India’s commitment to a multipolar world order, strategic autonomy, and a rules-based international system rooted in the UN Charter. Via: MEA In Paris, Jaishankar participated in the first-ever India–Weimar Triangle format—bringing together France, Germany, Poland, and India—marking a notable shift in European geopolitical outreach beyond the Atlantic alliance. The French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, emphasizing the urgency for “bridges between centers of stability,” made it clear that India's inclusion was deliberate and timely: France holds the G7 presidency, ...

IMPACT: After Exposure, Amazon Removes Reviews From Tharoor’s Book But Misrepresentation Questions Remain

Image
There has been a visible impact of IndianRepublic.in ’s reporting . More than two days after this publication documented a serious marketplace misrepresentation, Amazon India has now removed the misattributed reviews and ratings from the Kindle listing of The Sage Who Reimagined Hinduism: The Life, Lessons, & Legacy of Sree Narayana Guru by Shashi Tharoor .  But the correction is incomplete and the silence surrounding it is louder than ever. ; Representational Meme Source: MJ__Speaks on X As of this writing, the Kindle product page for Tharoor’s book (ASIN: B0G6Z7858F) continues to display the biographical description of another author, Amitava Kumar , under product description. This is a misleading artefact that remains live despite the removal of the reviews. The result is a listing that no longer carries borrowed ratings but still presents incorrect author information to readers under product description . Tharoor’s Kindle edition now has zero ratings and zero reviews. But...

India’s Congress Party Condemns US Military Action in Venezuela as Illegal, Citing UN Charter Violations Amid Global Outcry

Image
The Indian National Congress, India's main Opposition party, has issued a sharp rebuke of the United States’ military intervention in Venezuela by calling it a violation of international norms and a threat to global stability.  In an official statement posted by the party’s Foreign Affairs Department, the Congress expressed "grave concern" over what it described as “unilateral actions” undertaken by the United States in the Latin American nation over the past 48 hours.  Image Source: Kharge on X The party emphasized that such actions “transgress the settled principles of international law” as established in the United Nations Charter and other international treaties. The statement stressed the importance of respecting national sovereignty and peaceful coexistence, warning that bypassing these principles without explicit United Nations sanction risked returning the world to “primordial rules of statecraft.”  It underscored that the will of the Venezuelan people must remain...

UN Chief Warns US of Legal Breach Over Venezuela Strike: Regional Instability Likely Following Military Action

Image
In a noteworthy address delivered to the United Nations Security Council on 5 January 2026, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, through Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo, expressed grave concern over the United States’ recent military operation in Venezuela.  File Photo: Antonio Guterres The remarks mark the UN's most direct assessment yet of the unfolding situation after the dramatic seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces. According to the Secretary-General, U.S. troops operated in multiple Venezuelan states, including Caracas, Miranda, Aragua, and La Guaira, on 3 January, during what President Donald Trump later confirmed as a “large-scale strike.”  Trump’s declaration that the United States will "run the country until such time that we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition" was noted in the session as raising serious questions about the violation of international legal norms. The Venezuelan ...

Tongue-Tied, Dumbstruck, Lip-Locked: Tharoor’s Kindle Book Climbs 36,000+ Ranks Amid Marketplace Misrepresentation

Image
More than sixty hours after IndianRepublic.in exclusively documented a serious marketplace misrepresentation involving Shashi Tharoor’s latest book , The Sage Who Reimagined Hinduism: The Life, Lessons, & Legacy of Sree Narayana Guru , the listing remains live, uncorrected, and consequential. This is in brazen defiance of the law and utter disregard for transparency and fair play by entities concerned. Representational Meme Source: Edgar Again Poeha on X During this period, the Kindle edition of Tharoor’s book has continued to gain measurable traction despite having received no original ratings of its own . Instead, it has benefited from reviews and star ratings written for an entirely different book: Amitava Kumar’s The Social Life of Indian Trains . Those reviews, which reflect reader responses to Kumar’s earlier work, remain algorithmically attached to Tharoor’s Kindle listing. The misattribution has operated to Tharoor’s clear commercial and reputational advantage, even as ne...

What Happened So Far: UNSC Convenes Emergency Session After US Strikes While Global Reaction Intensifies Over Maduro’s Capture

Image
In a swift military operation that has shaken international norms and reignited global tensions, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores were seized by U.S. forces and transported to New York, where Maduro is now facing federal narcotrafficking and weapons charges.  Image Source: New York Post The operation, authorized by U.S. President Donald Trump and executed with the involvement of U.S. Navy warships, special forces, and intelligence assets, was described by the White House as part of a broader campaign to combat narco-terrorism and reestablish U.S. primacy in the Western Hemisphere. The early hours of Saturday saw at least seven coordinated explosions across Caracas, witnessed by residents and captured on video. Smoke billowed near a major military base, and several districts experienced electricity outages.  U.S. officials later confirmed that more than 150 aircraft had been deployed to neutralize Venezuela’s air defenses. JD Vance Defends Venezuela Operation, Links Maduro Capture to Drug Crackdown and U.S. Power Projection

Image
The United States Vice President JD Vance has publicly defended the recent U.S. military operation in Venezuela, framing it as a justified exercise of American power and a necessary strike against drug trafficking and the legacy of expropriated U.S. interests.  His comments, made via an extended social media statement, mark the most detailed response from a senior U.S. administration official since President Donald Trump announced the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. File Photo of US VP JD Vance; Via ElonNewsUpdate Vance’s remarks come amid escalating global criticism of the raid, which saw U.S. special forces seize Maduro in a rapid pre-dawn operation from his fortified residence in Caracas.  The Venezuelan leader was then transported via a U.S. Navy warship to Guantanamo Bay before being flown to New York, where he is now in federal custody facing narco-terrorism and weapons charges. The Vice President addressed growing skepticism aro...
