Opposition parties have demanded Kumar’s resignation over the Election Commission’s nationwide revision of electoral rolls, in protests that have run through October. The campaign followed a report in The Indian Express that the two other election commissioners, Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, had recorded objections at least fourteen times in ten months to decisions and orders connected with the revision, saying these were issued without their knowledge or recommendation.
Any fresh motion to remove CEC Gyanesh Kumar will follow due process, says Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla The Opposition has made two attempts to remove Kumar over alleged irregularities in the SIR exercise Notices from the first attempt were rejected by both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. In the second attempt, notices remain pending before the Rajya Sabha Om Birla said Parliament would follow the prescribed procedure if a fresh motion is moved

Removing a chief election commissioner is deliberately difficult. Once a motion is admitted, the Speaker or the upper house chairman appoints a three-member committee comprising a Supreme Court judge, a high court chief justice and a jurist. If it finds the charges proved, each house must then pass an address supported by a majority of its total membership and by two thirds of those present and voting, in the same session. The opposition does not command those numbers, and ruling party figures have said any motion would be defeated.
