India's Opposition Leader Forcibly Removed From Sit-In Outside Prime Minister's Residence

Delhi Police physically lifted and detained Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in Indian parliament's Lok Sabha, from a sit-in protest outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi's official residence, as a crisis over irregularities in the country's national entrance examinations escalated into the most serious confrontation between the government and its opponents in years.

Rahul Gandhi, his sister and fellow Member of Parliament Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav were removed from the protest site at 7 Lok Kalyan Marg by Delhi Police and the Rapid Police Force after they refused to vacate. Officers were photographed and filmed carrying Rahul Gandhi bodily before placing him in a police vehicle. Reports confirmed by multiple outlets stated that the officers who detained the parliamentarians were not wearing nameboards on their uniforms.

Rahul Gandhi is reported to have sustained an injury during the scuffle. The detentions came one day after police fired tear gas, conducted lathi charges, and imposed internet shutdowns on thousands of student protesters who had marched toward Parliament on Monday — the opening day of India's Monsoon Session — demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the alleged leaking of papers for the NEET-UG national medical entrance examination. More than fifty police personnel and over fifty protesters were injured in Monday's clashes.

On Tuesday, a government minister arrived at the protest site within approximately one hour of the opposition's sit-in beginning outside the Prime Minister's residence and entered into dialogue with Rahul Gandhi. This response timeline stood in pointed contrast to the government's forty-four days of silence toward the student movement that preceded it. An Aam Aadmi Party leader observed on social media.

India is the world's most populous democracy and its fifth-largest economy. The NEET-UG examination is taken by approximately 2.4 million students annually and serves as the sole gateway to medical college admissions — making its integrity a matter of acute national concern in a country where professional employment is scarce and competitive examinations determine the trajectory of entire families. 

Between 2014 and 2022, 22 crore Indians applied for central government jobs. 7.22 lakh were selected. The mathematics of aspiration and scarcity that produced this week's protests are not new. What is new is their scale, their persistence, and the image now circulating globally of the Leader of the Opposition of the world's largest democracy being carried away by unidentified police officers outside the Prime Minister's home.
