Trump Turns on Europe as France Blocks Arms Flights, War Rift Widens and Oil Shock Deepens

U.S. President Donald Trump sharply escalated tensions with European allies on Tuesday, lashing out at countries that have refused to support the war against Iran even as several governments moved to block military cooperation amid growing legal and economic concerns.

In posts on Truth Social, Trump criticised allies including the United Kingdom and France, telling countries struggling with fuel shortages to “go get your own oil” from the Gulf and suggesting they should “just TAKE IT” from the Strait of Hormuz, remarks that further rattled already volatile energy markets.

His comments came as France blocked Israeli aircraft carrying military supplies from using its airspace, Italy denied U.S. bombers landing access in Sicily, and Spain reaffirmed it would not permit U.S. use of its bases, with Madrid declaring it would not “accept lectures from anyone.”

While the U.K. has allowed U.S. use of its bases despite calling the war illegal, it too was publicly criticised by Trump, underscoring deepening fractures within the transatlantic alliance over the conduct and legality of the conflict.

The widening rift comes against the backdrop of intensifying battlefield and economic fallout, with oil prices surging and global supply chains under strain as the Strait of Hormuz remains disrupted. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said Tehran has the “necessary will” to end the war “provided that essential conditions are met,” including guarantees against future attacks, even as Washington continues to claim negotiations are underway.

France emerged as a central flashpoint in the widening transatlantic rift after it blocked Israeli aircraft carrying military supplies from transiting its airspace, a move that drew a sharp public rebuke from U.S. President Donald Trump, who called Paris “VERY UNHELPFUL.”

The French presidency responded that it was “surprised” by Trump’s remarks and stressed that France “has not changed its position since day one” of the war, signalling a consistent refusal to facilitate military escalation it views as unlawful.

The decision aligns with a broader European posture questioning the legality of the conflict, even as it exposes growing divergence within Western alliances over operational support, strategic objectives and the risks of further escalation in an already volatile region.

On the ground, violence continued to escalate, with Iran attacking a Kuwaiti oil tanker in the Gulf, explosions reported in Riyadh, and U.S. strikes hitting Isfahan, a city linked to Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.

The conflict has now killed more than 3,000 people and triggered what Ireland’s prime minister described as “probably the worst ever” oil supply shock, with U.S. fuel prices crossing $4 a gallon.
