Israel Strikes Iran’s South Pars Gasfield; Iran Hits Qatar LNG Hub as War Expands to Energy Infrastructure
Israeli strikes on Iran’s South Pars gasfield and subsequent Iranian missile attacks on Qatar’s Ras Laffan industrial city have marked a major escalation in the Iran war after Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei warned that those responsible for killing senior Iranian officials “will have to pay,” and Gulf states signalled a sharper diplomatic and security response to the widening conflict.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar condemned the strike as a “flagrant violation” of sovereignty and a “direct threat” to national security, warning that Doha “reserves its right to respond” and will take “all necessary measures” under international law. In a sharp diplomatic move, Qatar declared Iranian military and security attachés persona non grata and ordered them to leave the country within 24 hours.
"The ministry also reiterates that the State of Qatar reserves its right to respond in accordance with Article (51) of the United Nations Charter and the right to self-defense as guaranteed by international law, stressing that it will not hesitate to take all necessary measures to protect its sovereignty, security, and the safety of its citizens and residents," MFA Qatar said.
The escalation followed Israeli strikes on Iran’s South Pars gasfield — the world’s largest natural gas reserve, shared with Qatar — marking the first major attack on Iran’s core energy infrastructure since the war began.
Iranian officials warned that further attacks could trigger retaliatory strikes on energy facilities across Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned the targeting of the gasfield, warning that such actions could lead to “uncontrollable consequences” that might engulf the wider region. He said attacks on Iran’s energy infrastructure would not weaken Tehran but risked expanding the conflict’s global impact.
The UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also condemned Israel’s attack on Iran’s South Pars gasfield. Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi authorities said they were responding to incidents at the Habshan gas facilities and at the Bab field caused by 'falling debris' from the successful interception of missiles. The gas facilities have been shut down and no injuries have been reported.
In Tehran, Khamenei issued a written statement following the killing of senior security official Ali Larijani in an Israeli strike, describing the assassination as evidence of “the hatred of the enemies of Islam” and vowing that “every drop of spilled blood comes at a price.” The statement — only the second issued under his leadership since succeeding his father — underscores the hardening tone in Iran’s response to the conflict.
The latest developments come amid a broader wave of targeted killings of senior Iranian officials, including intelligence minister Esmail Khatib and Basij commander Gholamreza Soleimani, in what Israeli officials described as coordinated strikes on Iran’s security leadership.
As IndianRepublic.in reported earlier, the Iran war has entered a new phase targeting critical energy infrastructure, raising the risk of disruption to global gas and oil supplies and intensifying pressure on the Strait of Hormuz, through which around 20% of global energy flows.
