IAF Chief Flies MiG-29 From Western Frontline Base as India Signals Combat Readiness Amid Global Turmoil

India has signaled heightened military readiness in recent days as the war between Israel and the United States on one side and Iran on the other is fast spreading from the Gulf to the Indian Ocean. Today, Indian Air Force Chief Air Chief Marshal AP Singh flew a sortie on a MiG-29 UPG multi-role fighter from a frontline air base in the western sector, and reviewed operational preparedness amid rapidly evolving global security tensions.

The Indian Air Force said the Chief of the Air Staff flew an operational formation sortie led by Flight Lieutenant Parvinder Singh, with the aircraft executing a precise “smart peel-off” manoeuvre over the runway during the mission.

The visit included interactions with aircrew, technicians and veterans, as well as a briefing on the squadron’s 63-year operational legacy defending India’s airspace.

The sortie was carried out on the MiG-29 UPG, the upgraded variant of the Soviet-origin twin-engine fighter that forms a key part of India’s air defence network.

The aircraft is designed for air superiority and multi-role missions, capable of high-speed interception, beyond-visual-range combat and precision strike operations, and remains one of the Indian Air Force’s frontline fighters deployed along sensitive sectors.

Officials said the visit highlighted the force’s “operational preparedness amidst the dynamic geo-political scenario”. This reference is widely interpreted as reflecting the growing instability across global security theatres, including the expanding conflict in the Middle East and disruptions in global energy and maritime routes.

The demonstration also comes amid a series of recent military readiness activities across India’s armed forces. Earlier this week, IAF aircraft conducted combat free-fall and static-line para-drops over Tehri Lake in a joint exercise with the Indian Army, and showcased inter-service operational integration.

At sea, the Indian Navy’s stealth frigate INS Trikand is currently deployed in the southwest Indian Ocean region, conducting defence diplomacy and operational engagement during a port call in Mauritius.

Meanwhile, India’s defence research establishment has also been advancing operational logistics capabilities. The DRDO and the Indian Navy recently completed successful in-flight trials of the indigenous Air Droppable Container ADC-150 from a P-8I maritime aircraft, enabling rapid delivery of supplies and emergency equipment to naval vessels deployed far from shore.

These moves align with India’s broader long-term military strategy outlined in the “Defence Forces Vision 2047,” which emphasises maintaining high combat readiness, strengthening deterrence and building integrated multi-domain military capabilities to respond across the full spectrum of conflict.

The latest activities suggest that India’s military establishment is quietly reinforcing operational readiness across air, land and maritime domains, and positioning itself to navigate an increasingly volatile global security environment.

UPDATE: Separately, officers undergoing the Higher Defence Management Course (HDMC-21) visited India’s indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, where nearly 190 officers—including participants from friendly foreign countries—were briefed on carrier aviation and the warship’s operational capabilities, highlighting the role of carrier strike power in India’s maritime strategy and the expanding focus on joint, multi-domain military training as the armed forces prepare for complex security challenges across the Indo-Pacific.
