NATO on High Alert: Poland Closes Airspace, Puts Defenses on Alert After Reports of Russian Drones
Poland placed its air defenses on the highest state of readiness overnight as Russia launched large-scale drone strikes on Ukraine, according to the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces.
In a statement posted on X, the command said “Polish and allied aircraft are operating in our airspace, and ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems have reached the highest state of readiness,” describing the measures as preventive and aimed at protecting citizens near the eastern border.

The statement was later removed from the Ukrainian Air Force’s Telegram channel, and Polish officials have not confirmed that drones entered their territory.

Flight data reviewed by BNO News and Flightradar24 indicated unscheduled military activity, with F-16 and F-35 fighter jets operating in Polish airspace.
Reuters reported that Rzeszów Airport -- a critical logistics hub for Western aid to Ukraine -- was closed, followed by restrictions over Lublin Airport and later Warsaw airspace under a notice citing “unplanned military activity related to ensuring state security.”
The Polish Armed Forces confirmed that all necessary procedures had been activated, while stressing that the actions were “preventive in nature.”
Monitoring channels reported no interceptions as of early Wednesday.
