“Heading to NATO where, at worst, it will be a much calmer period than what I just went through with Israel and Iran,” Trump stated ahead of his departure.

“I look forward to seeing all of my very good European friends, and others. Hopefully, much will be accomplished!”

The summit, which was originally expected to focus on increasing NATO’s collective defense spending to 5% of GDP, now unfolds under the shadow of the recent Middle East crisis that pulled in both Israel and the U.S. after Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear sites triggered retaliatory missile exchanges.

Trump’s ceasefire, though publicly declared, has already faced violations from both sides. While Trump insists the ceasefire remains intact, tensions persist, with Iran’s Revolutionary Guard warning of a “double and destructive” response to any future aggression.

Regional powers Egypt and Saudi Arabia have urged restraint, while India continues its major evacuation mission under Operation Sindhu, bringing home thousands of nationals from Iran and Israel.

At NATO, Trump is expected to leverage the recent Middle East crisis to reinforce calls for stronger alliance cohesion and higher defense contributions from member states. Meanwhile, the ongoing war in Ukraine remains a central issue as NATO leaders deliberate future security commitments.
