The ship is designed primarily for maritime surveillance and patrol. The Navy says she can also conduct low intensity maritime operations, serve as a platform for target deployment and trials, operate as a mothership for unmanned and autonomous systems, carry out humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, be converted into a limited hospital ship, and undertake salvage work.

Her combat suite uses indigenous sensors, weapons and electronic systems.

The ship was built at Larsen and Toubro’s Kattupalli yard near Chennai to a design from the company’s warship design centre in the same city. More than 75 per cent of her content is Indian, meeting the government’s domestic participation requirement.

The ship’s crest shows an Indian elephant rising from the waves, which the Navy says represents strength, intelligence and agility. Her motto, in Sanskrit, translates as “Victory is Our Sole Aim”. The name means supporter.
