China has issued a strong condemnation of the United States following its large-scale military operation in Venezuela that led to the capture and removal of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores.

In an official response released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Beijing on January 3, a spokesperson called the U.S. action a blatant use of force against a sovereign nation and a serious breach of international law.

The statement came in response to a direct question posed at a press briefing, referencing public claims made by U.S. President Donald Trump on the social platform Truth Social, where he described the operation as a “successful” mission involving a military strike and the extraction of Venezuela’s head of state.

Beijing expressed “deep shock” over the development and described the actions of the U.S. as hegemonic, saying they not only violated Venezuela’s sovereignty but also posed a significant threat to peace and stability across Latin America and the Caribbean.

Labeling the strike and subsequent capture of the Venezuelan leadership as a serious infringement of established global norms, China stated its firm opposition to such unilateral actions.

The Ministry urged the United States to adhere to international law, uphold the principles of the United Nations Charter, and immediately cease what it characterized as violations of other nations’ sovereignty and security.

The Chinese government did not indicate whether it would take additional diplomatic or multilateral action, but its statement aligns closely with earlier condemnations from Russia and several Latin American nations.

It reflects growing international scrutiny of the legality, motives, and regional consequences of the U.S. operation, which Washington claims was executed in response to longstanding narco-terrorism indictments against Maduro.

China has long maintained close economic and political ties with Venezuela, particularly in the energy sector, where Chinese firms have invested heavily in oil infrastructure.

In recent years, Beijing has consistently opposed foreign intervention in Venezuela, supporting Caracas in the United Nations and other international forums.

The response from China adds to the emerging global divide over the U.S. intervention, with several key players warning of potential long-term implications for regional stability and global adherence to international law.

Focus is expected to shift to the United Nations Security Council, where permanent members like China and Russia are likely to demand accountability and call for multilateral dialogue over unilateral force.
