Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan led the tributes, calling for national recognition of the “unwavering commitment, exceptional valour, and supreme sacrifices” of the Indian Armed Forces who have “steadfastly safeguarded the Nation’s sovereignty across all frontiers and domains.”

In a message shared by the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff, General Chauhan greeted all ranks of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, along with veterans and Veer Naris. He acknowledged their enduring contribution to India’s defence preparedness and national security.

Observed annually on December 7 since 1949, Armed Forces Flag Day serves to mobilise public support for the welfare of serving personnel, battle casualties, and ex-servicemen.

Citizens across India are wearing miniature tri-colour flags symbolising the three services and contributing to the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund, managed by the Kendriya Sainik Board under the Ministry of Defence.

The day is also marked by ceremonial displays, donation drives, and awareness campaigns organised by military units and state governments.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu are expected to join in the day’s commemorations with tributes and appeals for national solidarity.

Originally established by the Defence Minister’s Committee in 1949, Flag Day remains one of India’s oldest post-independence observances. It was created to reinforce the civilian responsibility to support those who defend the nation.

Funds raised on this day have historically gone toward rehabilitation, resettlement and welfare schemes for serving soldiers, veterans, disabled personnel and war widows.
