Modi to Trump: India–US Talks Will Unlock ‘Limitless Potential’ Amid Tariff Clash

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that India and the United States are continuing negotiations to resolve trade barriers, stressing that the partnership remains “close” and “natural.”

In a post on X, Modi said: “India and the US are close friends and natural partners. I am confident that our trade negotiations will pave the way for unlocking the limitless potential of the India–US partnership. Our teams are working to conclude these discussions at the earliest. I am also looking forward to speaking with President Trump. We will work together to secure a brighter, more prosperous future for both our people.”

Trump, in his earlier post, said he looked forward to speaking with his “very good friend” Modi and predicted “no difficulty” in reaching a “successful conclusion for both of our great countries.”

The exchange comes just days after Modi publicly responded to Trump’s criticism of India’s continued imports of Russian oil.

On September 6, Modi described the relationship as “very positive and forward-looking,” while Trump said he remained “very disappointed” with India’s energy purchases from Moscow but insisted the U.S.–India partnership was “very special.”

Trade tensions have been mounting since the Trump administration imposed 50% tariffs on select Indian exports, a move New Delhi condemned as “unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.”

Trump aides have also accused India of profiting from discounted Russian crude by re-exporting refined products, a charge Indian officials have not directly addressed.

Despite frictions, both leaders continue to highlight strategic cooperation across defense, technology, and trade. This shows the personal rapport that has defined recent exchanges between the leaders of the world's oldest and largest democracies, the most fitting thread that connects both the leaders and people of the United States and India.
