U.S. President Donald J. Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi exchanged warm words during a birthday call that appears to mark a shift in tone following weeks of trade tension.

Trump, in a public message, said he had a “wonderful phone call” with Modi, wished him a happy 75th birthday, and thanked him for supporting efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war.

Modi responded on X, expressing gratitude and reaffirming commitment to strengthening the India-U.S. strategic partnership.

This was the second direct call between the two leaders in less than a week. The timing is significant, coming shortly after the Trump administration imposed 25% tariffs on Indian goods and an additional 25% on India’s Russian oil imports, escalating trade duties to 50%.

The U.S. has cited India’s continued energy trade with Russia as justification, a move that drew sharp reactions from New Delhi.

Despite the friction, Trump recently praised Modi from the Oval Office, calling him a “great Prime Minister” and saying they would “always be friends,” signaling a diplomatic reset.

Modi, meanwhile, has maintained confidence in trade negotiations, stating that “our teams are working to conclude these discussions at the earliest.”

The exchange shows a recalibration in U.S.-India ties, with both sides emphasizing dialogue and partnership over dispute. While tariffs remain in place, the leaders’ comments suggest that behind-the-scenes diplomacy is active.

The shift in tone may reflect broader geopolitical imperatives, with both leaders eyeing strategic gains ahead of key political timelines.
