Modi, Meloni Urge Urgent End to Ukraine War, Back India–EU Trade Pact and IMEC
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni spoke by telephone on Wednesday. They stressed the urgency of ending the war in Ukraine and aligning on trade and connectivity priorities.

The Italian government also confirmed that both sides committed to back “all international efforts to foster a ceasefire and a resumption of negotiations to reach a just and lasting peace.”

Modi said he “thanked PM Meloni for Italy’s proactive support for concluding a mutually beneficial India–EU trade agreement,” while Meloni, according to the MEA statement, reiterated “Italy’s strong support for conclusion of a mutually beneficial India–EU Free Trade Agreement at the earliest.”

The leaders also agreed to strengthen connectivity under the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEEC/IMEC), with both sides noting its role in advancing shared economic interests.

In parallel, they also stated their commitment to the India–Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–29, and reviewed progress across investment, defence, security, space, science and technology, education, counter-terrorism, and people-to-people ties.
The Italian statement described the current state of relations as “excellent” and confirmed the intent to “further develop” the action plan, starting with expanded commercial cooperation and investments.

The Indian side added that Meloni also voiced Italy’s support for the success of the AI Impact Summit, to be hosted by India in 2026.
Both leaders agreed to remain in touch as the partnership deepens.
