What We Know: Madrid Bar Explosion Injures 25, Authorities Probe Possible Gas Leak

An explosion tore through a bar in Madrid’s Puente de Vallecas district on Saturday, injuring at least 25 people and forcing the evacuation of residents from the building above. Emergency services said two victims were in “serious” condition and three were classified as “potentially serious.”

The blast occurred at around 3 p.m. local time at the bar Mis Tesoros, a neighborhood establishment in the working-class district east of the city.

Fire officials said the structure remains unstable and access to the apartments above is blocked.

Nine housing units connected to the building have been evacuated, with residents set to be rehoused in the coming days.

While local media attributed the incident to a gas leak, Deputy Mayor Inmaculada Sanz told reporters it was “too early to predict what the cause of the explosion could have been.”

Madrid’s fire chief Carlos Marín confirmed that no one remains trapped under the rubble but warned the building’s entrance was destroyed, cutting off safe access.

Witnesses described scenes of chaos as emergency teams rushed to treat the wounded. Madrid deployed three intensive care ambulances, four basic ambulances, logistical support, and psychological assistance units.

Images from the scene showed firefighters clearing debris while paramedics attended to victims on the street.

The explosion is the latest in a series of gas-related incidents that have rattled Spanish cities in recent years, though investigators have not yet confirmed the cause.

Authorities said structural engineers will assess the building before residents can return.
