U.S. President Trump Unveils 2028 Olympics Task Force, Signals Tougher Global Stance on Trade, War, and Security

U.S. President Donald J. Trump, who is now serving his second non-consecutive term as the 45th and 47th President, delivered a nationally televised address on Tuesday. During this, he unveiled plans for a federal Olympics Task Force ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Games, while fielding pointed questions on foreign policy, military aid, and domestic governance.

Speaking from the White House, President Trump emphasized that the 2028 Olympic Games would not only serve as a celebration of American athleticism and unity but also coincide with the nation’s 250th anniversary.

“We’re winning like we’ve never won before,” Trump declared. “In 2028, we’ll show the world what America does best.”

Olympic Preparations: Task Force and Infrastructure

Trump announced the formation of a multi-agency federal task force that includes the Department of Justice, Homeland Security, FBI, Secret Service, and Department of Transportation to ensure that the Games are "safe, seamless, and historically successful."

He promised a “fantastic, safe, and beautiful event,” with venues spanning iconic California locations such as Dodger Stadium, Rose Bowl, Universal Studios, and Venice Beach.

Notably, Trump referenced a ban on biological males competing in women’s events, praising U.S. Olympic officials for the policy. "The United States will not let men steal trophies from women at the 2028 Olympics," he stated.

Tariffs, Ukraine War, and Global Trade

During the post-address press conference, Trump hinted at imminent trade penalties, especially for countries that continue to buy Russian energy, including China.

“I never said a percentage,” he said when asked about the rumored 100% tariff, “but we’ll be doing quite a bit.”

He reiterated his opposition to U.S. involvement in Ukraine, referring to the conflict as “Biden’s war” and claiming that “it never would have happened” under his presidency. Trump suggested that America should not continue to fund what he described as a “military scraping the bottom of the barrel.”

U.S. Security and Domestic Challenges

Pressed on California wildfire risks, Trump criticized local and state officials, particularly Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, for failing to clear brush and expedite building permits.

He pledged the use of the National Guard or military if needed to secure the Olympics, citing prior success in resolving infrastructure challenges by bypassing state-level restrictions.

“It’s going to be so safe if we have to,” he declared. “We’ll use everything necessary.”

Global Energy and India Relations

Asked about India’s criticism of U.S. energy double standards, particularly its own imports of Russian uranium and fertilizer, Trump said, “I don’t know, we’ll have to check.” The comment followed weeks of friction between New Delhi and Washington over oil trade and sanctions.

Governance, Border Policy, and 2028 Politics

Trump used the opportunity to promote his administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration, boasting of "zero" criminal border entries for “three months in a row.”

He also signaled that he may not seek a third term, and praised Republican lawmakers like J.D. Vance and Marco Rubio as possible successors.

“It’s too early to talk about it, but (Vance) is doing a great job and would probably be favored,” Trump said.

Looking Ahead

With 11,000 athletes expected to compete across 800 events in 49 venues, the 2028 Olympics is shaping up as a signature moment in Trump's second term. According to Casey Wasserman, Chair of the LA28 Committee, the administration’s support has been “unwavering.”

“This is going to be the greatest Games ever held,” Wasserman noted, announcing that the Olympic torch relay will visit all 50 U.S. states for the first time in history.
