Trump Deploys Nuclear Submarines Near Russia, Escalates Tensions Amid BRICS Spat and Global Trade Rift

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that he had ordered two nuclear submarines to be “positioned in the appropriate regions” near Russia. He cited recent remarks by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev as justification.

“I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” Trump said.

The sudden nuclear posturing comes amid an intensifying geopolitical clash involving the United States, Russia, and the BRICS alliance -- a group of emerging economies including India, Brazil, Russia, China and South Africa.

Just this week, Trump lashed out at BRICS, calling it a “club of corrupt regimes” and warning that any nation deepening economic ties with Russia should “prepare for consequences.”

India, long seen as a key U.S. partner, came under direct fire when Trump slammed its energy and arms trade with Moscow.

He imposed a 25% tariff on Indian exports and labeled India a “dead economy,” provoking sharp rebuttals from New Delhi.

“We won’t compromise national interest for trade deals,” India’s commerce minister said on Thursday.

Analysts say it also bolstered BRICS unity as the bloc seeks to challenge Western economic dominance with its own trade systems, currency plans, and energy corridors.

In that context, Trump’s submarine deployment is being viewed not just as a warning to Russia, but as part of a broader pattern: trade aggression, sanctions, and now military signaling, often delivered via social media with little warning or coordination.

Medvedev, now deputy chair of Russia’s Security Council, had warned of “catastrophic” consequences if the West continued to push against Moscow’s red lines in Ukraine and Eastern Europe.

Trump’s nuclear response adds volatility to a world already reeling from multiple crises -- from famine in Gaza and armed escalations in Asia, to economic realignments across Europe and the Global South.

The White House has not yet issued a formal statement beyond the Truth Social post.

Military officials have declined to specify the location or type of the submarines deployed, but naval analysts suggest they are likely Ohio-class ballistic missile submarines, capable of carrying dozens of nuclear warheads.

The latest move shows the increasingly unilateral, confrontational stance Trump has adopted in global affairs -- whether it’s slamming NATO members, threatening India and China with tariffs, or ridiculing allied leaders on global stages.
