France and UK Announce Support for Palestinian Statehood Amid Escalating Gaza Crisis

France and the United Kingdom issued back-to-back declarations supporting the recognition of a Palestinian state as humanitarian conditions deteriorate in Gaza.

French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed in a letter to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas that France will proceed with official recognition of Palestine as a sovereign state at the United Nations General Assembly in September.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer echoed the move, stating that ceasefire efforts must lead toward a two-state solution that guarantees security for both Palestinians and Israelis.

In his letter dated July 24, Macron praised the Palestinian Authority’s renewed commitment to democratic reforms, disarmament of Hamas, and the organization of elections by 2026.

He reiterated France’s support for the two-state solution and condemned the Hamas-led October 2023 attacks while calling for the release of all hostages and the withdrawal of Hamas from Gaza’s governance.

Simultaneously, Prime Minister Starmer issued a statement condemning the “unspeakable and indefensible” suffering in Gaza, labeling it a humanitarian catastrophe.

He announced an emergency call with E3 partners (France, Germany, UK) to coordinate urgent aid delivery and push for an Israeli policy shift to allow humanitarian access.

Starmer emphasized that Palestinian statehood is an “inalienable right,” and affirmed that ceasefire steps must lead to full recognition of Palestine.

Both leaders stressed that the path to peace requires mutual recognition, security, and a rapid end to hostilities, underscoring alignment with US, Qatari, and Egyptian diplomatic efforts.
