Tesla Debuts in India with First Showroom in Mumbai’s BKC, Launches Model Y at ₹67.8 Lakh
Tesla has officially entered the Indian market, opening its first showroom in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex on Tuesday. The launch marks the EV maker’s long-awaited debut in the world’s third-largest car market.
Tesla will begin by selling imported units of the Model Y, priced at ₹6.78 million ($79,000). Deliveries are set to begin in the third quarter of 2025. In the U.S., the same model sells for $44,990 before tax credits.

The debut comes amid falling global sales and rising political heat around CEO Elon Musk. While India’s EV market currently accounts for just over 2% of all car sales, the government aims to raise that to 30% by 2030.
Tesla's high pricing means it will target the luxury segment, competing with BMW and Mercedes-Benz, rather than Indian budget brands like Tata or Mahindra. Luxury cars make up just 1% of vehicle sales in India today.
Despite the limited market share, Tesla’s arrival is seen as a vote of confidence in India’s clean energy goals and a potential spark for the local EV ecosystem.
