ACCOUNTABILITY: Indian Parliament to Debate Military Action Inside Pakistan Next Week Amid High Decibel Politics

India’s Monsoon Session of Parliament opened with intensity and interruption on Monday, as the opposition's unrelenting demand for a debate on Operation Sindoor, the code name given to India's decisive military action against terror launch pads in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Jammu and Kashmir, and accountability for recent national tragedies sparked repeated disruptions in the Lok Sabha.

In a crucial development, a 16-hour debate on Operation Sindoor has now been scheduled for next week, according to a decision by Parliament’s Business Advisory Committee (BAC).

The decision comes after days of behind-the-scenes negotiations and pressure from the opposition parties, who insisted the Prime Minister must respond personally.

However, the debate was deferred due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled diplomatic visits to the UK and Maldives from July 23–26.

The Opposition has criticized the postponement, asserting that Parliament’s time should be prioritized over foreign engagements when national security is at stake.

The Operation Sindoor discussion -- a response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, in which innocent civilians were killed -- is one of eight key issues the 24-party INDIA bloc had identified in a recent strategy session.

These include concerns over electoral reforms, China border tensions, the situation in Manipur, and the restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi, addressing the media outside Parliament, referred to Operation Sindoor as a “Vijay Utsav” -- a national celebration of India’s military prowess.

“Within 22 minutes, India’s armed forces achieved their target, deep inside enemy lines,” Modi stated, calling the operation a symbol of India’s growing indigenous defence capabilities.

Despite the powerful rhetoric, the Lok Sabha witnessed noisy protests through much of the day. The Opposition walked into the session with fire in its belly, demanding detailed government accountability not only for Operation Sindoor but also for the Air India crash in Ahmedabad, which claimed 260 lives.

The government has already confirmed that a full AAIB-led investigation is underway, with black box data decoded domestically for the first time.

Tributes were also paid to the eight former MPs who passed away recently, as well as to victims of the Pahalgam terror strike and the Ahmedabad plane crash.

The Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Om Birla, urged all members to uphold the dignity of the House and break the trend of first-day disruptions.

Adding a sense of occasion to the day, the House congratulated ISRO and Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla for their landmark mission that saw the Indian tricolour unfurled aboard the International Space Station.

A detailed discussion on India’s space ambitions is also planned for later in the session.

Despite the initial friction, the confirmation of a structured debate on Operation Sindoor marks a key moment of procedural cooperation in this high-stakes session.

Whether it paves the way for productive discourse or more political confrontation will be revealed next week, when the eyes of the nation -- and the world -- turn to the Indian Parliament for answers.
