India-Brazil Relations Strengthen as Modi, Lula Meet; Modi Receives Top Honour

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during his ongoing state visit to Brazil, with both leaders stating a shared commitment to deepen economic and strategic cooperation.

The leaders held extensive discussions on enhancing bilateral trade, clean energy, and joint work in critical areas such as defence, semiconductors, space, and artificial intelligence.

PM Modi described the talks as “fruitful,” highlighting President Lula’s “passion for India-Brazil friendship.” The Indian leader said both sides recognized the “immense scope” for expanding and diversifying trade linkages in the years ahead.

Modi noted, “Our talks included ways to deepen trade ties and also diversify bilateral trade. We both agree that there is immense scope for such linkages to thrive in the coming times.”

According to statements shared by Modi’s official handle and echoed by Brazil’s presidential communication team, both sides discussed sustainable development, climate cooperation, and the need for inclusive digital and technological growth. Cooperation in clean energy and climate change mitigation featured prominently in the bilateral dialogue.

President Lula and Prime Minister Modi also committed to increasing collaboration in defence and security, AI-driven innovation, agriculture, and emerging technologies.

Special emphasis was placed on cooperation in space exploration, digital public infrastructure (DPI), and semiconductor manufacturing — sectors both countries see as pivotal to future economic resilience.

The Indian Prime Minister was conferred the Grand Collar of the National Order of the Southern Cross — the highest civilian honour Brazil bestows on foreign dignitaries.

The Indian Prime Minister expressed gratitude to President Lula, the Brazilian government, and its people, calling the honour a reflection of the “strong affection the people of Brazil have for the people of India.”

“This illustrates the strong affection the people of Brazil have for the people of India. May our friendship scale even newer heights of success in the times to come,” the Indian Prime Minister posted.

Earlier in the day, Indian PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome in Brasília, marking the start of his state visit following a productive leg at the BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro.

The Indian Prime Minister praised Brazil’s leadership of the 2025 BRICS Presidency. He noted its role in “making the platform even more effective.”

India and Brazil, both members of BRICS and the G20, have been working toward strengthening south-south cooperation and diversifying their diplomatic and economic relationships beyond traditional alignments.

Their growing collaboration in multilateral forums has been matched by interest in bilateral technology partnerships and renewable energy investments.

This visit marks a high point in India-Brazil relations and is expected to set the tone for deeper engagement in the lead-up to the G20 meetings later this year, where both countries are expected to play key roles in shaping a common agenda for developing nations.
