Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday addressed the session on "Environment, COP30, and Global Health" at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, asserting India’s longstanding commitment to ecological balance and inclusive development.

He underlined that despite being the world’s fastest-growing major economy, India was the first country to achieve its Paris Agreement goals ahead of schedule, and added that for India, climate justice is not an option but a moral duty.

He called for the transfer of climate technologies and affordable climate finance to ensure equitable global progress. Modi cited flagship Indian initiatives such as Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment), Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam (Tree for Mother), the International Solar Alliance, and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure as examples of India’s global leadership on sustainability.

On global health, the Indian PM noted the deep interlink between planetary and public health, stating that the COVID-19 pandemic proved viruses do not arrive with visas, nor do solutions require passports.

He highlighted India’s efforts through Ayushman Bharat, the world’s largest public healthcare scheme, as well as India’s use of technology and traditional medicine systems to promote wellness.

Modi concluded by stating that India stands for the values of People, Planet, and Progress, and is committed to a just, equitable and inclusive future for all.
