Japanese Ship Itsukushima Docks in India's Chennai to Boost Maritime Synergy

Japanese Coast Guard ship Itsukushima, under the command of Captain Naoki Mizoguchi, arrived at Chennai Port on July 7, 2025. This marks a significant step in reinforcing maritime cooperation between India and Japan.

The visit, part of the ship’s Global Ocean Voyage Training, reflects the growing strategic alignment between the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) in the Indo-Pacific.

The week-long port call includes a wide range of bilateral engagements—from courtesy visits and reciprocal ship tours to joint professional training, yoga sessions, and sports interactions.

The highlight of the engagement will be a joint sea exercise, aptly named Jaa Mata ("see you later"), scheduled for July 12, aimed at enhancing operational interoperability between the two maritime forces.

Further deepening the collaboration, four ICG officers will board Itsukushima as Sea Riders for its onward journey to Singapore. This professional exchange underscores the long-standing cooperation between the two nations. This is rooted in a 2006 Memorandum of Cooperation and carried forward through India’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision and the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative (IPOI).
