NEWSALERT: Bangladesh Tribunal Jails Former PM Hasina for Contempt

A special tribunal in Bangladesh has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to six months in prison for contempt of court, following the release of an audio recording in which she appeared to undermine judicial authority.

This is the first conviction against Hasina since she fled to India during the 2024 uprising that ended her 15-year rule.

The case was based on a leaked phone recording, verified through forensic analysis, in which a voice attributed to Hasina referred to charges filed against her during the unrest. The court found the statement contemptuous and ruled that it challenged the integrity of ongoing legal proceedings.

Separate investigations are underway into multiple deaths linked to last year’s unrest, under the interim administration led by Muhammad Yunus.
