Indian PM Modi to Attend G7 Summit in Kananaskis; Visit Cyprus and Croatia

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will depart Sunday for a four-day, three-nation visit to Cyprus, Canada, and Croatia, with his itinerary centered around participation in the 51st G7 Summit at Kananaskis, Canada, on June 16-17. This marks Modi’s sixth consecutive appearance at the G7 Summit.

Modi will begin his trip with an official visit to Cyprus on June 15-16, his first visit to the Mediterranean nation as Prime Minister and the first by any Indian Prime Minister in over two decades. 

He will meet Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides in Nicosia and address business leaders in Limassol. According to the External Affairs Ministry, the visit aims to strengthen India’s ties with Cyprus, the Mediterranean region, and the European Union.

On June 16-17, Modi will travel to Kananaskis at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to attend the G7 Summit. Discussions will focus on global challenges including energy security, artificial intelligence, the AI-energy nexus, quantum technologies, climate response, and economic resilience. 

The summit will also address global security, foreign interference, transnational crime, and peace efforts in Ukraine and other conflict zones. Modi is expected to hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines.

Canadian Prime Minister Carney emphasized the G7's goal of taking unified, coordinated action on peace, economic security, digital transition, and strategic global partnerships.

Following the summit, Modi will make a historic first official visit to Croatia on June 18 at the invitation of Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković. During his stay, Modi will hold talks with Plenković and meet Croatian President Zoran Milanović. 

The visit marks a significant milestone in India-Croatia relations and broader engagement with the European Union.

World leaders attending the G7 Summit include U.S. President Donald Trump, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

Special invitees include Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Brazilian President Lula da Silva, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
