Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called Cyprus a "reliable partner" for India and emphasized the significant potential to strengthen bilateral cooperation.

Modi, who is on a two-day official visit to Cyprus — the first by an Indian prime minister in over two decades — made the remarks during a business roundtable with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides.

Addressing business leaders, Modi said sectors such as innovation, energy, technology, and tourism offer opportunities for collaboration. He added that many Indian companies see Cyprus as a gateway to Europe.

In a post on X, Modi said, "Boosting business linkages! President Nikos Christodoulides and I interacted with leading CEOs in order to add vigour to commercial linkages between India and Cyprus." He also highlighted India’s economic reforms and growing digital economy.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, business leaders discussed expanding cooperation in areas including trade, fintech, startups, AI, IT, logistics, defense, and shipping.

Two agreements were signed during the visit: a Memorandum of Understanding between NPCI and Eurobank of Cyprus to introduce UPI services for cross-border payments, and an MoU between NSE International Exchange Gift City and the Cyprus Stock Exchange to facilitate cross-border capital flows.

Bilateral trade between India and Cyprus stood at USD 136.96 million for April 2023 to March 2024, according to MEA data.

After Cyprus, Modi will proceed to Canada for the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, followed by a visit to Croatia.
