Modi Urges Immediate De-escalation in Call with Iranian President After US Bombs Iran's Nuclear Facilities

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken with Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian of Iran on Sunday. He expressed deep concern over the rapidly escalating conflict between Israel, Iran, and now the United States. Modi stated India’s firm position that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable path to restore regional peace and stability.

The conversation comes just hours after the United States launched direct military strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, which marks a dangerous new phase in the ongoing Israel-Iran war. The U.S. bombed fortified Iranian nuclear sites at Fordo, Isfahan, and Natanz — its first direct combat operation since hostilities began.

US President Donald Trump claimed the strikes had “completely obliterated” key elements of Iran’s nuclear program, while warning of further action if Iran retaliates.

The United Nations has since warned of a rapidly worsening situation, with Secretary-General António Guterres describing the developments as “gravely alarming” and cautioning against a broader regional catastrophe. Iran, while confirming the attacks on its nuclear infrastructure, has vowed that its program will continue and accused Washington of illegal aggression. Tehran’s ambassador to the UN has called for an emergency Security Council meeting to address what it termed “heinous attacks.”

The conflict, which unfolded with Israeli strikes targeting Iran’s nuclear program, has already killed hundreds and wounded thousands. Israel’s Defense Chief has said the country must prepare for a "prolonged campaign." The U.S. involvement has introduced a new layer of complexity, raising fears of a much larger war that could engulf the Middle East.

India, with its longstanding diplomatic ties to both Israel and Iran, has maintained a cautious but firm position advocating restraint. Modi’s call showed New Delhi’s growing role as a stabilizing voice amid turbulent geopolitical shifts. It also reflected India’s broader concern over the safety of its large diaspora in the region, including thousands of students currently being evacuated from Iran under Operation Sindhu.

India’s balanced but assertive diplomatic stance may increasingly serve as an important moderating influence in the days ahead.
