Modi Holds Bilateral Meetings with German Chancellor and Mexican President at G7 Summit
On the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Canada, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral meetings with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, signaling India’s growing diplomatic engagement with key global partners.
In his first meeting with Chancellor Merz since the German leader’s assumption of office in May 2025, Prime Minister Modi extended congratulations on his electoral victory and thanked Germany for its condolences following the recent Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad.

Both leaders expressed satisfaction with the momentum in India-Germany ties, particularly as the two countries mark 25 years of their Strategic Partnership.
The discussions covered a broad spectrum of cooperation, including trade and investment, defence, security, green energy, sustainable development, innovation, technology, education, and mobility.
The leaders also emphasized their shared commitment to combating terrorism, with Prime Minister Modi acknowledging Germany’s support for India’s counterterrorism efforts.
They exchanged views on regional and global developments, with Modi inviting Chancellor Merz to visit India at a mutually convenient time.
Separately, Prime Minister Modi met Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, also for the first time since her historic electoral victory.
The two leaders highlighted the longstanding friendship between India and Mexico and agreed to deepen cooperation in multiple sectors such as trade, start-ups, innovation, science and technology, and the automotive industry.
The discussions explored opportunities for expanding pharmaceutical collaboration, with India positioned to contribute to affordable medicine production and supply. Both leaders discussed near-shoring prospects.
They noted Mexico’s growing role as an investment destination. Cooperation in emerging sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, quantum technology, and critical minerals also featured prominently.
President Sheinbaum expressed interest in India’s achievements in technology and digital public infrastructure, while both leaders noted the potential for enhanced cultural exchanges, tourism, and growing think-tank interactions.
They also discussed pressing global issues and the priorities of the Global South. Prime Minister Modi recalled his previous visit to Mexico in 2016 and extended an invitation to President Sheinbaum to visit India.
