In a post on X, PM Modi shared details of his conversation with Carney, saying, “Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister @MarkJCarney of Canada. Congratulated him on his election win and thanked him for the G7 invite.”

Highlighting a renewed phase of engagement, Modi added, “As vibrant democracies with strong people-to-people ties, India and Canada will move forward with mutual respect and shared goals. I look forward to meeting at the Summit.”

The outreach marks a significant thaw in India-Canada relations, which had deteriorated during former PM Justin Trudeau's tenure, largely due to concerns over Khalistani separatist activities in Canada.

The summit, hosted by Canada from June 15–17 in Kananaskis, will bring together leaders of the world’s most industrialized nations — the US, UK, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Canada — along with the EU. Key topics will include the Ukraine crisis, West Asia tensions, and global economic recovery.

The gesture of goodwill between Modi and Carney comes amid tensions in Canada, where a mass shooting incident with multiple casualties was reported just days before the Summit.
