The tribute reflects India’s ongoing effort to strengthen ties with key partners across Africa while simultaneously reinforcing its message of unity, resilience, and shared history. Emir Abdelkader, remembered as a symbol of anti-colonial resistance and state-building, was honoured by the Indian delegation as part of its cultural and political diplomacy agenda.

The visit to Algeria is one of several taking place under India’s 33-nation diplomatic campaign, aimed at building global consensus against terrorism in the wake of the deadly Pahalgam attack, which left 26 civilians dead. These delegations are engaging with lawmakers, civil society, and diaspora groups to present India’s unified, cross-party stance on counterterrorism.

Algeria, which has its own legacy of resistance and nation-building, shares historical and political affinities with India’s post-colonial journey. The homage to Emir Abdelkader served as a moment of symbolic alignment, reinforcing common values of self-determination, sovereignty, and peace.

The Indian delegation, comprising MPs from across party lines, is also holding meetings with Algerian officials and representatives to discuss bilateral cooperation in sectors including energy, education, healthcare, and agriculture, alongside regional and international issues of mutual interest.

India’s outreach in Algeria also reflects its intent to deepen South–South cooperation, drawing on civilizational connections while positioning itself as a global voice against terror. Algeria has consistently supported India in international forums, including on issues related to counterterrorism and global governance reform.
