The attack, carried out by terrorists from across the border, claimed the lives of 26 people—including a national of Nepal—marking the highest civilian toll in a single terrorist incident in India since the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

The Pahalgam attack, marked by brutal close-range killings in front of victims’ families, aimed to incite communal tension and send a message of terror beyond India’s borders. In response, India carried out a measured and proportionate operation, named Operation Sindoor, on the night of May 6–7, 2025.

As part of its diplomatic outreach to counter terrorism globally, India has deployed seven multi-party parliamentary delegations to 32 countries. The delegation in Ethiopia is holding a three-day visit to engage with Ethiopian leadership, media, civil society, academic circles, and the Indian diaspora.

The delegation includes MPs from across political parties: Ms. Supriya Sule (NCP-SCP), Mr. Rajiv Pratap Rudy (BJP), Mr. Manish Tewari (INC), Mr. Anurag Singh Thakur (BJP), Mr. Lavu Sri Krishna Devarayalu (TDP), Mr. Vikramjeet Singh Sahney (AAP), and senior leaders Mr. Anand Sharma and Mr. V. Muraleedharan. Ambassador Syed Akbaruddin, former Permanent Representative to the UN, is also part of the delegation.

Today, the delegation met former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn, who expressed condolences over the Pahalgam attack and drew parallels to terrorism in Africa’s Horn and Sahel regions. He reaffirmed support for India’s stance of zero tolerance against terrorism and pledged to promote regional and global cooperation against it.

The delegation reiterated India's unwavering commitment to combating terrorism in all forms and urged collaborative efforts from the international community.
